Digital Assets

Understanding your digital assets

Make a practical inventory of devices, accounts and digital work.

List the main categories

Include computers and phones; photographs and documents; email and social accounts; websites and domains; and any digital business assets you own or manage.

Separate access from ownership

An account, a purchased licence and content you created may have different rules. An item appearing in your inventory does not mean someone else can automatically inherit or access it.

Record useful details safely

Note the provider, purpose, recovery process and where authorised instructions can be found. Keep passwords, recovery codes and financial secrets in a suitable secure password manager, not ordinary planning notes.

Decide what should happen

Mark which items you hope to preserve, close or pass on, subject to provider rules and legal authority. Keep personal and business records separate, and review the list regularly.
