Writing a personal legacy letter
Share the stories, values and lessons you want remembered.
Start with one memory
Choose a moment that matters to you. Write what happened, how you felt and what you learned. A short, honest story is enough to begin.
Share what you value
Describe the people, traditions or experiences that shaped your life. Add hopes for the future or something you would like a loved one to understand.
Choose your audience
Keep the letter private while drafting. Decide who may read it and when. Respect other people's privacy and avoid using the letter to pressure someone into contact or forgiveness.
Use your own format
Write a letter, collect photographs or record your voice when suitable media tools are available. You can add to it over time. A legacy letter, sometimes called an ethical will, does not replace a legal will or transfer ownership of belongings.
